The Challenge
The Brooke had been running on infrastructure hosted in Dudobi's own private data centre, a reliable setup, but one that belonged to a model Dudobi no longer believed was the right long-term home for clients' critical systems. When Dudobi made the decision to close its private data centre entirely and move every client onto AWS, The Brooke's migration became part of a broader commitment: not a reaction to failing infrastructure, but a deliberate step towards a more secure, scalable, and future-proof platform. As custodians of sensitive donor, beneficiary, and operational data spanning multiple continents, The Brooke needed the move handled with the same care and continuity their global operations demanded, with no disruption to the services that teams rely on in some of the world's most challenging environments.
The Solution
Dudobi designed a secure, right-sized AWS environment built around The Brooke's specific operational needs. Production and development workloads were segregated using dedicated EC2 instances, giving the charity a clean separation between live operations and ongoing development work. Centralised backups, IAM-based access controls, and CloudWatch monitoring were implemented to bring consistency and oversight to the new environment from day one. Systems were segmented by function and hardened for compliance throughout, with encryption, audit logging, and governance controls embedded into the architecture rather than added afterwards. Access from The Brooke's head office was tightly restricted and routed through secure bastion access with clearly defined permissions, ensuring that sensitive data remained protected without making day-to-day operations more difficult for staff.
The Results
The Brooke now operates on a secure, future-ready foundation aligned with UK data protection requirements and charity governance standards. Encryption, monitoring, and access controls have measurably strengthened the organisation's security posture, while the move away from physical infrastructure has reduced total cost of ownership at a time when every pound matters to a nonprofit's mission. Automated patching and monitoring have brought operational stability that didn't exist before, reducing both downtime and the manual burden on a small internal team.
